Here’s to a year of positivity + possibility
We’re currently touring the mid NSW coast line and we’ve been blown away by it’s beauty and charm. The people we’ve met, the locals and would you believe the many many holiday makers who also call the Gold Coast home.
No stress. Sun kissed, salt in our hair, hearts full and 2 very tired children by 1pm every day. That’s what holidays are all about right! It’s been wonderful. New friendships, new adventures, and a new place to explore every day.
This is what we call living!
Things don’t fulfil us. But we know too well in today’s society that they are used as a measure of success. The car you drive. The (mortgaged?!) house you live in. The clothes you wear. It’s all just stuff and at the end of the day, you can’t take it with you.
What we value now has changed a lot in 10 years. I don’t know whether it’s children that shift our perspective or just a stage of growth in our lives but we’ve very much on a simpler path these days.
We love this time of year. For us it’s all about recharging, reflecting on the year that was, and looking forward with renewed energy at what we want the coming year to be.
At the end of every year we start by writing a list:
➝ Everything we did. Think.. concerts we went to, holidays we took, special friends we caught up with.
➝ What we achieved in business. We helped our clients purchase 50 properties this year!! and on the flip side helped 20 of our clients sell their property for a premium.
➝ What we saved for. What we said NO to, and what we did in property, (bought, sold, renovated etc).
The key theme for us this year was all around simplifying our lives – to fit more of the good stuff in and live a more meaningful life.
➝ We closed all but 2 of our accounts. One for business. One for personal. No credit card. We still have a loan account and specific transaction account for each of our investment properties – this keeps things clean and simple.
➝ We donated, recycled, sold and binned over 3,000 items. We still have lots more to go!
➝ We introduced a capsule wardrobe for everyone in our home. 33 items. 3 months. I was very surprised at how simple yet effective this was – Eva learnt about the concept here.
➝ We read Scott Pape’s book – the Bare Foot Investor for families and introduced money jars for Myles. Highly recommend reading this, even if you don’t have children.
➝ We went digital – managing our investments, our business, our life admin, even our kids artwork. It has been a total game changer.
➝ We fully renovated our office and we freaking LOVE it!! Stop by and check it out next time you’re in Paradise Point.
➝ We created our own outdoor oasis. This took so much more of our time than we expected but we had a blast doing it!! We’ll share more on this with you later this year but after renovating 2 of our investment properties in 2 years we thought it was time to do some work on our own home. Don’t worry, we still have the original 1970’s purple bath and blue toilet!
Reflecting is great, but we can’t move forward if we spend all of our time looking in the rear vision mirror!! We have one very simple focus this year – relationships.
So while you’re busy thinking about what this year will look like to you, I want to leave you with this…
There will always be someone smarter, richer, and better looking out there. Don’t play the comparison game. Don’t chase status. Don’t base your own happiness and self worth on other peoples opinions about your choices.
Be unabashedly you. And be happy for other people’s success. Look at the amazing things other people are doing and instead of being discouraged that you have fallen short, be inspired by what’s possible.
And perhaps most importantly, expect the same from those around you.. Run in circles of people that lift each other up not drag each other down.
